Nagpur: Orange City Hospital & Research Institute (OCHRI) pioneered in commencing regular Cochlear Implant Surgeries to provide much needed advanced succor to needy children from Central India who were unable to hear from birth. Parents of children born with hearing defects thus had a new ray of hope. Such hearing-impaired children in the city and region now look forward to this new bionic ear implant which not only allows them to hear but also speak normally. The implant, an electronic device, helps patients pick up auditory signals by stimulating the hearing nerve.

Health Upgrade : GMCH to have more efficient round-the-clock services

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Taking serious note of the complaints about absence of competitive doctors at Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of the government hospitals during night hours, the state government has now decided to refurbish the system to better the doctor-patient relationship and improvise services.

Dr KR Sonpure, officer on special duty (OSD) for medical education and public health, has asked all the medical colleges in the state to submit staff availability, right from junior residents, senior residents and teachers in each department requiring an intensive care unit at the earliest. He has written a letter to the principal secretary and director of medical education and research department.

The information is being sought to develop state-of-the-art ICUs (medicine, gynaecology, surgical, orthopaedics, paediatrics etc in each) at GMCHs in Maharashtra with adequate junior and senior qualified staff as well as available infrastructure.

“Currently, in every GMCH the patients are admitted to ICUs by the doctors on duty on that particular day. This creates a gap between the treating doctor and the doctor who has admitted the patient. The doctor who admits comes only once on round and prescribes treatment, whereas the treating doctor is someone else. Also, there is no senior doctor round the clock,” said Dr Sonpure.

With the new scheme, each ICU will have special units of doctors comprising junior resident, senior resident, lecturer and associate professor so that senior doctors are also available round the clock. Also, the residents will be able to take difficult decisions in the presence of seniors.

“Since each special unit will be posted for at least three months in a particular ICU, it will give them good experience by following the treatment on a patient for a long time. This will improve their skills as well,” said Dr Sonpure.

The proposed idea will also help in fulfilling the norms of the Medical Council of India (MCI), both of staff and infrastructure. Hence, it will indirectly raise the standard of the medical college. The scheme has provision of a dependency unit and a transportable ventilator from the casualty to the ICU.

“Sometimes, it takes about half an hour or more for serious patients to reach from the casualty to ICU. Hence, there should be enough portable ventilators to make the system effective,” said Dr Sonpure.

He has first sought the staff position so that the deficiency could first be fulfilled before starting the project at GMCHs

Why Nagpur doctors are against act to check cut practice?

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur:It appears the flourishing and money-minting doctors in Nagpur do not like the idea of keeping a check on their cut practice. Probably which is why Indian Medical Association (IMA)’s Nagpur branch does not see any need for such an act when regulating bodies like the Maharashtra Medical Council, the Medical Council of India, Consumer Protection Act and Human Rights Commission exist and “are joining their job well”.

IMA president Dr Vaishali Khandait said that the government should first clarify whether medicine was a technical profession, commercial establishment or business. “Corporate hospitals which are actually business models are not covered under the act whereas solo practitioners and small nursing homes are forcibly brought under it,” she said.
Secretary Prashant Rathi said that instead of formulating a new act, there was a necessity to strengthen the existing bodies who already have judicial powers. “Of course, there is need to redefine certain grey areas,” he said.

Dr Prakash Deo, said that as per the proposed draft the competent authority to act is anti-corruption department of police. “Giving the police, these powers, is like introducing police raj. Since the act claims that the name of the complainant would not be discloses it indirectly means that anyone can blackmail any doctor,” he said.

According to Dr Deo, the IMA was itself against any unethical practice and had a grievance cell. “There is no clear definition of ‘cut practice’. The definition should be negative to determine what doesn’t constitute cut practice. Any doctor refers to any other specialist on whom he/she has trust. Now, doctors will just refer a patient to a cardiologist and let him wander in search of one,” said Dr Deo.

Dr YS Deshpande said that there was need for police to act on public servants and doctors were not public servants. “The new law would be unconstitutional as ultimately it will go against the interest of patient as it will deny the patient,” he said.

Dr Milind Naik said that no law alone can change the behaviour of the people. Hence, there was a need for an in-depth study of existing practices with data to create a new law. “Shouldn’t there be rules of ethics for the corporate sector too,” he asked.

Dr Mangesh Gulwade, MMC’s ethical committee convener said that introduction of any Act does not become a sacrosanct solution for any problem. “Experience of PCPNDT Act, MTP Act and Act against violence of medical professionals has proved this. An Act is not a panacea to resolve all issues,” he said.

Dr Avinash Wase, Dr Sanjay Deshpande, Dr Dilip Agrawal, Dr, Ashish Disawal, Dr Anil Laddhad also spoke on the occasion.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur- A 45 year-old man from Nagpur was detect with atypical chest pain and breathlessness at a local hospital here and was diagnosed to have a large pseudo aneurysm (abnormal swelling) arising from ascending aorta. He was referred to Dr. Sameet Pathak (Cardio Thoracic surgeon and Vascular Surgeon) at Wockhardt Nagpur. All the necessary investigations were done after thorough clinical examination. This pseudo aneurysm was eroding the sternum from below. It was partially filled with organised thrombus and its wall was also calcified at places. Pulsations from aorta could be felt over the sternum.

An urgent surgical intervention was planned by Dr Pathak and his team Dr Awantika Jaiswal (Anesthetist) and Dr Ketan Chaturvedi (neurologist). As sudden rupture of this aneurysm would have been fatal. The patient and relatives were counseled regarding need of surgery and its possible complications. Patient was taken up for surgery. Opening the sternum is usually the first step in cardiac surgical procedures.

But in this patient it was not at all possible because the pseudo aneurysm was touching the sternum from below and could have ruptured instantly on sternotomy (opening the sternum). Dr Awantika Jaiswal (Anesthetist), Dr. Ketan Chaturvedi (neurologist). This surgery was done by a very special technique called the Deep Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest.

Patient was electively ventilated overnight and neurological assessment was done next morning by Dr Ketan Chaturvedi (neurologist) which showed that he had weakness in his left upper limb. Haemodynamically he made an uneventful recovery with no bleeding issues. He gradually improved neurologically and was discharged home in stable condition. Its been a year now and he still comes for regular follow up and is doing well.

Dr Pathak said very few cases like this have been reported till date in literature and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest is the only technique by which this peculiar presentation can be successful.

Schools can provide an ideal platform for not only promoting positive health but for disease prevention, early diagnosis, treatment and follow up of defects and awakening health consciousness in children”.

Dr. Deepak Dongre, Coordinator- Aglee Peedhi expressed that, “Since last 20 years OCHRI regularly organizes School Health check-up camps under the name and style of “Aglee Pidhi” as a Corporate Social Responsibility. This is to ensure and make children aware of the importance of taking care of their health from a young age. Such regular school health examinations helps to build a sound foundation for student’s future.”

Parvati Iyer, Principal stated, “after medical check-up a descriptive report for individual student was provided. A health record of each student is being maintained by school for 10 years. The parents are advised to take the children for referral check-up by specialists for further treatment. This helps parents in understanding the health of their ward. She appreciated the professionalism of the OCHRI doctors and thanked them for their valuable service to the students.”

Nagpur: The students having MBBS degree will not be able to practice if instead of Medical Council of India, the bill of National Medical Commission comes. The MBBS students will not get registration for practice.

As per the NMC Bill MBBS doctors will first have to first qualify a exam and if they pass in this they can practice. But the doctor getting degree from foreign university and foreign doctors have been excluded from this exam. Till now these had to qualify exam as per MCI rule to practice in India. But now as per new rule they will be exempted.

The doctors passing out with less margin will face problem. The members af Indian Medical Association and Medical Council of India are opposing the bill . According to them NMC will be run by government and this will increase corruption. It is not proper to bring the bill during the present parliament session.

GMCH, poor man’s hospital turns ‘inhospitable’

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Nagpur is no more a poor man’s hospital. The OPD charges have been increased to Rs 20 from Rs 10. Interestingly, once you pay the charges and visit the hospital again after seven days, you will have to cough up the charges afresh.

On medicines front, the supplier has reportedly stopped supply of medicines over non-payment dues amounting to Rs 35 crore, according to media reports. Now there is acute shortage of drugs, as a result. Forget life saving drugs, even the necessary medicines are not available in the hospital. Accident or emergency patients have to wait for hours for treatment. Relatives are forced to purchase medicines from open market. Due to shortage of doctors, surgeries are postponed for seven or more days. Even the emergency surgeries.

No signboard of increased charges:
The OPD and IPD charges in GMCH have been increased. But the administration has not put up any signboard indicating the change. This ‘no board’ apathy many a time sparks unnecessary skirmishes at various counters as till yesterday Rs 10 were charged and now suddenly the counter employee demands Rs 20.

X-Rays, MRI to cost more:
After increase in OPD charges, next on the table is blood test, X-ray, MRI, ECG, sonography, surgery, and various other treatment methods. 25 percent increase in charges is being expected, according to media reports.

A look at various departments of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), arguably the biggest hospital in Asia, would reveal that all is not well and the hospital itself is ailing. Although the GMCH boasts itself of a well-equipped hospital and a team of expert doctors, a number of expensive equipments are either gathering dust for no reasons or ‘misused’ depriving the needy patients of proper treatment.

New Delhi: The Modi government plans to raise the 2018-19 health budget by 11 per cent to $8.2 billion (Rs 52,295 crore).

According to sources, Health Minister JP Nadda had sought a $10 billion budget for stepping up disease control.

As per official records, as on March 31, 2015, there were 1, 53, 655 Sub-Centres, 25,308 Primary Health Centres and 5,396 Community Health Centres (CHCs) functioning in the country. Evidently, given India’s population, these numbers are far from adequate.

Other areas that the industry hopes the Budget will address is encouragement to set up more number of highway accident trauma centres and rescue teams given that India records a large number of deaths due to accidents every year.

The government should find ways to cover the uncovered population under health insurance. India may be having a right to mental health today but it has still to come up with right to health.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Mumbai: The Governor of Maharashtra Ch. Vidyasagar Rao has called upon Radiologists to provide radiological services to the common man at affordable costs. Observing that the cost of diagnostic imaging services such as MRI, CT Scan, PET scan continues to remain high despite technological advancements in the field, he felt that there should be voluntary effort from Radiologist Associations to provide radiological services to the people at affordable prices.

Regretting that female feticide continues to be practiced in some parts of the country despite the enactment of the PCPNDT Act, the Governor called for collective efforts from radiologists and society to change the mindset of people towards the girl child.

The Governor was speaking at the inauguration of the 17th Asian-Oceanian Congress of Radiology at Hotel Renaissance, Powai in Mumbai on Thursday (25th Jan). More than 1000 radiologists from different Asian countries are attending the Conference.

The Governor noted that modern inventions in radiology have helped to save millions of lives across the world and improved the quality of life of several million others. He said Radiologists can play the most important role in detecting and preventing cancer and other life – threatening diseases relating to heart, kidney, intestine and other organs through early diagnosis and minimum invasive procedures.

Noting that India has only 1 Radiologist per 1 lakh population, he called upon the association of Radiologists to offer Tele-Radiology support to hospitals in rural areas. He also stressed the need for skill updation and continuing medical education for radiologists.

Former Minister and MLA Nasim Khan, newly elected President of the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association Dr K Mohanan, Outgoing President Dr Bhupendra Ahuja, President of Asian Oceanian Society of Radiology Dr Y H Chou and eminent radiologists were present.
