Wockhardt Hospital Nagpur successfully performs region’s first distinct blood group kidney transplant

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Wockhardt hospital Nagpur recently performed a rare ABO incompatible (within different blood group) kidney transplant. In one of the first such surgery to have been performed in Nagpur, such transplant is considered extremely difficult. However, the experts at Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur made it possible.

It is to be mentioned that in an ABO incompatible kidney transplant the blood groups of donor and the receiver are not compatible. Mr. Jagdish Kaware, (51) a wastepaper supplier from Nagpur was suffering from chronic kidney disease since 1.5 years.

Although, his wife was more than willing to donate her kidney, it was a challenge as they did not have the same blood group. As a result, he had been waiting for his blood group compatible cadaver for years. Finally, he was given the option of an ABO incompatible transplant which he and his wife decided to go ahead with.

Organ transplant within distinct blood groups is considered challenging as an organ from a blood group incompatible donor is likely to trigger the recipient’s immune system to release antibodies. The antibodies attack the donated organ, considering it as a foreign body. To overcome this, the kidney transplant team adapted a treatment protocol to remove antibodies from the blood before the transplant.

Such organ transplants need tremendous post surgical care. Several extra tests have to be performed regularly to trace the attack of antibodies. However, recovery period of the donor as well as recipient is almost same as that of ABO compatible transplantation.

‘’This patient had been waiting for transplant desperately as he wanted to get it done promptly. Since he did not have a matching donor in his family and nowadays with the recent advances in transplant medications, ABO incompatible transplant has started in a big way in the country, I decided to offer him the choice, explained him about the complete procedure, which he accepted and we were able to do our team’s and region’s 1st successful ABO incompatible kidney transplant’’ said, Dr. Sameer Choubey , Senior Nephrologist, Wockhardt Hospitals. Nagpur

“This is the first time we contemplated successfully doing ABO incompatible transplant. This will open possibilities of transplantation for patients who do not have matching blood donors in the family hence have to suffer for want of a kidney” informed, Dr. Sanjay Kolte, Urologist.

Discussing the rare surgery Centre Head, Wockhardt Hospitals, Nagpur, said, “We feel proud and happy that we could contribute in better healthcare of our patient. This transplant of having a living donor with a different blood type will reduce the time on a waiting list for some people. We are obliged that we were able to contribute in the same in some way”.

Statistics indicate that 1 in 10 persons in the general population are estimated to have some form of chronic kidney disorder. About 1,75,0000 new people have kidney failure every year. But only 3-4% people get kidney transplant. ABOi is a successful method to expand the organ pool and decrease the long waiting times for the deceased donor transplants.

Wockhardt Hospital Nagpur has completed 150 kidney transplant surgeries in the last 7 years and was the first to do a kidney transplant in whole central India

Transplant team members include- Dr. Sanjay Kolte, Dr. Sameer Choubey, Dr. Swanand Melag, Dr. Bhau Rajurkar, Dr. Surjeet Hazra, Dr. Jeetendra Hazare and Transplant coordinator Dr. Bhavana Methwani

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Perhaps, just like most of the population you spend much of the day sitting at a desk. And, probably you are just like many people who don’t give heed to right sedentary behaviour. If it’s right, we are sorry to say but you are at an increased risk of pain in back and problems in the spinal cord. In fact, you may even end up with the permanent damaging of the spinal cord.

While painkillers and analgesics can provide temporary relief, you can’t solely rely on the benefits of Dolo 650, Ibuprofen, Aspirin or any other medicine. You need some harmless tips that can help your neck and back feel better at work.Check out this article to catch 5 handy tips that may go a long way in managing back pain at work.

  1. Adjust keyboard and monitor placement

The easiest thing you can do to have a healthier spine is to take care of the placement of the keyboard and monitor.

Keeping your monitor too low will make your head to angle downward, thereby inducing stress in your neck. Thus, to ensure the correct posture, place your monitor directly in front of you so that thecentre of the screen is aligning with your nose.

The keyboard must be placed close enough that your elbows are bent nearly 90 degrees while typing. Make sure that you are not forced tobend down through your shoulders to use the keyboard. The mouse must also be placed at the exact level as that of the keyboard.

  1. Limit the usage of tablets and phone

It is often seen that people tend to angle their heads forward when using tablets and phones (especially touch screen). Holding head in such a position for prolonged periods can cause strained and painful muscles. In the long run, this may even lead to disc or joint injuries in the spinal cord.

Thus, it’s better to use your desktop computer rather than phones and tablets.

  1. Pay attention to good posture

While caring for the spinal cord and back, the importance of a good posture is something that can’t be denied. A good posture is a posture that distributes your weight equally through your sit bones (bones in the lower portion of the hips).

While sitting at your desk, try not to slouch. Hold your back straight, or rest it straight against the back of the chair, and the head should be in a neutral position. The height of the chair should be adjusted wellthat your thighs angle down slightly.

  1. There’s no need to overprotect your posture

Remember, that maintaining a good posture is to keep you relaxed and it’s a natural tendency to slouch or to move into a more comfortable zone. So, even if you fail to maintain a perfect posture, there’s nothing to worry about. Overprotecting the posture by restringing your movement will do no good; rather it will affect the health of the spine adversely.

  1. Stand often

No matter how relaxing it may sound, sitting inthe office is actually not relaxing at all. The longer you sit, the harder it gets for you to hold good posture. Thus, to ensure that you hold a good posture for long hours try spending at least one to two hours (in divided phases) on your feet. For this, you may take short breaks and if taking breaks is not possible, you use standing or convertible desks.

  1. Walk around

Just like our rest of the body, our spines are also meant to move. Sitting continuously for hours may increase the risk of developing persistent pain in the neck, back and shoulders. Thus, it’s important you walk around yourworkplace every half hour, especially when you feel slight achiness or stiffness in backs shoulders and neck. To get onto this habit, set alarms on your smartphones to go off every half an hour. While it might not be feasible to get up every time the alarm rings, it can be agood reminder that you have been resting your sit bones for quite a long.

  1. Choose the right footwear

Wearing high heels regularly may affect the centre of the body, thereby negatively affecting the back support and posture by inducing compensatory alignment of the entire body. So, if you are in love with your high heels, maybe it’s time to break up with them! Choose flats or low heels over high heels, start propping a leg up on a footrest, opt for supportive shoe orthotics, and see the difference yourself.

The above-mentioned tips can be easily inculcated in your existing lifestyle. Just give them a try and they will surely pay off in terms of a healthier spine, and reduced pain and stiffness over time.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: In a land mark judgment, the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission asked Wochkardt Hospital to pay Rs 20 lakh, with 9 per cent interest along with litigation expenses of Rs 20,000 for medical negligence causing death of the patient.

The complainant Anil Gupta submitted that his wife Mamta was admitted to Wockhardt Hospital on August 2, 2011 as she was suffering from headache. After CT scan, it was discovered that she was suffering from hydrocephalus. She then underwent a surgery conducted by Dr Shailesh Kelkar on August 11, 2011. Her condition had improved and was scheduled to be discharged on September 4, 2011. However, on the suggestions of doctors, Mamta was sent for scan, a day prior to her discharge. While shifting her on bed she was dropped by the hospital staff.

Gupta accused the hospital of negligence where staff meant for cleaning of floors was summoned to shift her. Further, none of the doctors was present when the patient was handled, Gupta alleged. After falling on the ground, the VP Shunt installed during the surgery, was dislodged and patient’s condition deteriorated, Gupta alleged.

In spite of repeated requests, neither specialist doctors attended the patient nor was the CT scan conducted till midnight. The patient suffered internal injury and developed a clot in the brain.

Counsel for complainant Adv Tushar Mandlekar argued that negligence of hospital caused the life threatening injury to Mamta. After developing the clot, the hospital did not give her correct treatment and did not conduct the surgery immediately. On September, 21 -2011 when her condition worsened she was subjected to another surgery.

In spite of specialist doctors like Dr Ajay Sakhare, Dr Ajay Kurve, Dr Ankur Jain, Dr Shailesh Kelkar treating the patient she could not be saved and died on December 12 2011.

The hospital argued that Mamta was already suffering from cancer and was taking treatment from Dr Anand Pathak since 2011 and she died due to cancer. The hospital filed affidavits of Dr Divik Mittal (Neurosurgeon), Dr Bhushan Nemade (Oncologist), Dr Saurabh Bilala (Neurophysician), Dr Amit Dhakoji, Dr Ajay Kurve, Dr Shailesh Kelkar (Neurosurgeon), Dr Ankur Jain along with affidavits of Sunil Sahastrabuddhe Centre Head, K Sujata and other hospital staff.

Mandlekar argued that hospital committed gross medical negligence in giving treatment to patient. There was a delay of 17 days in calling neurosurgeon and giving treatment causing her death, he contended.

Adv Mandlekar assisted by Adv Rohan Malviya while Adv Geeta Handa Khanuja argued for Wockhardt Hospital.

When you think of spinal cord injuries, you may assume that they only occur from traumatic incidents such as vehicle accidents or high impact sporting injuries, but you would be wrong. There are many different ways in which the spine can be damaged and one of them is by not taking care of your back during regular day to day activities. Practicing good posture when sitting at work is one way to ease the stress on your back, if you spend a lot of time sitting in front of a computer, and this can help to avoid back pain.

Painkillers and analgesics can provide temporary relief if you have back pain, but it’s better to not rely solely on the benefits of Dolo 650, Ibuprofen, Aspirin or any other similar medicines. A preferred long term approach would be to follow some basic principles for maintaining a healthy back and managing back pain at work, like the seven highlighted below.

Dr. JaspalArnejainformed the gathering that patients with chronic heart failure are admitted to the hospital an average of three times a year and 25 to 30 per cent of the patients die within a year of initial diagnosis. He further said that heart failure is a serious concern and if not addressed on time, it may escalate to catastrophic proportions. “Heart failure doesn’t mean that the heart has stopped working. It means that the heart is unable to pump adequate blood and as a result, the body stops receiving enough oxygen leading to breathlessness, swelling over legs and fluid retention.”
